What Does It Really Mean to Age Well? Introducing the Three Foundations of Healthy Ageing
Healthy Ageing Isn't About Chasing Youth
I turned 60 this year.
It's one of those milestone birthdays that naturally makes you pause and reflect. It certainly did for me.
It prompted me to ask a simple but important question: What does it really mean to age well?
Is it simply about living longer? Is it staying healthy and active so we can continue enjoying the people, places and experiences that bring us joy? Is it keeping our minds sharp, our bodies strong, and maintaining our independence as we grow older?
Perhaps the better question is: What does healthy ageing look like in the 21st century?
For me, healthy ageing isn't about chasing youth or trying to turn back the clock. It's about building the strongest possible foundation for the decades ahead.
Healthy ageing isn't about controlling every aspect of how we age; it's about supporting the factors that are within our influence. While we can't stop the passing of time, we can influence how well we age. The everyday choices we make, how we nourish our bodies, care for our gut, move regularly, prioritise sleep and manage stress. all play an important role in supporting our long-term health and wellbeing.
As a naturopath, I've come to believe that healthy ageing doesn't happen by chance. It is built on consistent, sustainable habits that support the body's remarkable ability to adapt, repair and thrive over time.
That's why I've developed what I call the Three Foundations of Healthy Ageing. Rather than focusing on quick fixes or the latest wellness trend, these foundations centre on the areas that have the greatest influence on how we feel today and how we age tomorrow.
In this article, we'll explore each foundation and why together they provide a practical, evidence-informed framework for supporting health, vitality and resilience at every stage of life.
Foundation One
A Healthy Gut: The Foundation of Whole-Body Health
The gut microbiome is increasingly recognised as one of the key links between nutrition and healthy ageing.
Trillions of microorganisms live within our digestive tract, forming what is known as the gut microbiome. This remarkable community plays an important role in supporting many aspects of our health, including digestion, immune function, metabolism and communication with the nervous system. A healthy, balanced gut microbiome also helps support nutrient absorption and contributes to the body's natural defence against harmful microorganisms.
Our gut microbiome is constantly changing throughout life. From infancy to older age, its composition is influenced by factors such as our genetics, environment, medications, lifestyle and, importantly, the foods we eat. As we age, natural changes such as slower digestion, reduced digestive enzyme production and shifts in dietary habits can also influence the health and diversity of the gut microbiome.
The encouraging news is that our everyday food choices can have a meaningful impact. A diet rich in a variety of plant foods can help nourish the beneficial bacteria that support a healthy gut, while also contributing to overall health and wellbeing as we age.
Research suggests that dietary patterns rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, wholegrains, nuts, seeds, omega-3 fats, fermented foods and polyphenol-rich foods are associated with a healthier and more diverse gut microbiome. In contrast, dietary patterns high in ultra-processed foods, processed meats, sugary drinks, refined grains and excess sodium have been associated with lower microbial diversity and less favourable healthy ageing outcomes. A large study published by Tessier and colleagues in “Nature Medicine” found that higher-quality dietary patterns were associated with a greater likelihood of healthy ageing across multiple aspects of health.

Foundation Two
Hormonal Wellbeing: Supporting Your Wellbeing Through Perimenopause and Menopause
Hormonal changes are a natural part of ageing, and for women, midlife can bring some particularly noticeable shifts. While these changes are a normal part of the transition through perimenopause and menopause, they can also influence how we feel and function from day to day.
During midlife, changes occur not only in the production of our hormones, but also in how our bodies respond to them and how different hormonal systems communicate with one another. These changes can have an influence across many aspects of health, including metabolism, bone and muscle health, cognition, reproductive health and emotional wellbeing.
Understanding the Hormonal Changes of Midlife
For women in their 40s and 50s, one of the most significant hormonal changes is the fluctuation and decline of the reproductive hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. These changes are a natural part of the transition through perimenopause and menopause, eventually leading to the end of the menstrual cycle.
As hormone levels fluctuate, women may notice changes in areas such as sleep, energy, mood, body composition and menstrual cycles. Every woman's experience is different, and symptoms can vary considerably throughout this transition.
Testosterone also changes with age, although its decline tends to be more gradual. Testosterone plays a role in a number of processes within the body, including supporting muscle mass, bone health, energy and sexual wellbeing.
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is another hormone that naturally declines with age. Produced primarily by the adrenal glands, DHEA acts as a precursor for other hormones, including oestrogen and testosterone.
It's More Than Just Oestrogen
When we talk about hormonal wellbeing, it is easy to focus solely on reproductive hormones. However, our hormonal systems are interconnected, and a number of other hormones play important roles in maintaining normal body function.
These include hormones involved in metabolism, stress regulation, thyroid function, bone health, growth and repair.
This is one reason why supporting wellbeing during midlife is about more than simply focusing on one hormone.
Supporting Hormonal Wellbeing Through Healthy Ageing
While we cannot stop the natural hormonal changes that occur with age, there are many aspects of our health and lifestyle that we can influence.
Regular physical activity, including both aerobic exercise and resistance training, can support cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, bone health and metabolic wellbeing. A varied, nourishing diet, adequate sleep, stress management and other healthy lifestyle practices can also form an important part of supporting wellbeing throughout midlife.
This is where a personalised approach can be valuable. Every woman's experience of perimenopause and menopause is different, and the foundations of healthy ageing, including nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management and gut health can all contribute to a broader picture of wellbeing.
Rather than trying to fight the changes that come with ageing, the goal is to understand them, support the body through the transition and focus on the aspects of health that we can positively influence.

Lifestyle and Nutrition: A Key Factor in Healthy Ageing
Our environment and lifestyle, alongside our genetics, can influence how we age.
Healthy eating, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, social connection and effective stress management all play an important role in supporting health and wellbeing throughout life. Among these lifestyle factors, nutrition is particularly important, providing the energy and nutrients our bodies need to function, repair and adapt.
The Influence of Epigenetics
You may have heard the term ‘epigenetics’ and wondered what it means.
In simple terms, epigenetics looks at how lifestyle and environmental factors can influence the way our genes are expressed, without changing the underlying DNA sequence itself.
Think of your genes and DNA as the instruction manual your body is born with. Epigenetic processes can influence which of those instructions are more or less active in response to factors such as nutrition, physical activity, stress and our environment.
Nutrition, in particular, can interact with biological processes involved in gene expression, highlighting the important relationship between what we eat and how our bodies respond over time.
Eating for Healthy Ageing
Research into healthy ageing has explored a number of dietary patterns, including the Mediterranean-style diet, traditional Okinawa dietary patterns and approaches that involve controlled energy intake.
While these approaches differ, they share many common principles: a wide variety of whole foods, plenty of plant-based foods, healthy fats, adequate protein and an emphasis on minimally processed foods.
These dietary patterns may help provide the nutrients and beneficial plant compounds our bodies need, while also supporting a diverse and healthy gut microbiome. They may also help support healthy inflammatory processes within the body.
And importantly, healthy ageing doesn't require following a perfect diet. It is the overall pattern of our food choices, together with our lifestyle, that matters.
The Power of Plant Compounds
Many foods contain naturally occurring compounds that are being studied for their potential role in healthy ageing.
Polyphenols, found in foods such as berries, extra virgin olive oil, green tea, herbs, spices and colourful vegetables, are one example. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods such as oily fish, walnuts and chia seeds, are another.
Research suggests that these nutrients and plant compounds may interact with a range of biological pathways, including pathways involved in inflammation, cellular function and epigenetic processes.
Rather than looking for a single “anti-ageing” food or nutrient, a more helpful approach is to focus on variety, nourishment and consistency.
Healthy Ageing Is Built in the Everyday
Healthy ageing isn't about trying to stop the ageing process. It is about giving your body the nourishment, movement, rest, connection and support it needs to adapt and thrive as you move through each stage of life.
A colourful and varied diet. Regular movement. Quality sleep. Time spent with people who matter to you. Finding ways to manage stress. These everyday foundations work together to support your health and wellbeing — and they are all within your influence.
This is where lifestyle and nutrition become such an important foundation of healthy ageing
The Foundations of Healthy Ageing
Healthy ageing isn't built through one perfect decision. It's built through hundreds of small choices repeated over time.
As we move through midlife and beyond, our bodies naturally change but how we support those changes can make a meaningful difference to our overall health and wellbeing.
The Three Foundations of Healthy Ageing — gut health, hormonal wellbeing, and lifestyle and nutrition are deeply interconnected. Your gut is influenced by what you eat, your hormones interact with many systems throughout the body, and your everyday lifestyle choices can influence how your body responds and adapts over time.
Rather than searching for a quick fix or trying to do everything perfectly, healthy ageing is about building supportive habits that are realistic for your life.
Nourishing your body with a varied, nutrient-rich diet. Supporting a healthy gut microbiome. Staying physically active. Prioritising quality sleep. Finding ways to manage stress. Maintaining meaningful social connections. And recognising that your needs may change as you move through different stages of life.
These small choices may seem simple, but together they form the foundations for supporting your health and wellbeing over the long term.
Healthy ageing isn't about preventing getting older. It's about giving your body the support it needs to age well with strength, resilience and vitality.
