The Gut-Hormone Connection: How Your Gut Supports Healthy Oestrogen Balance

Over the past decade, research has highlighted the important influence of the gut microbiome on many aspects of health, including hormone metabolism.
Your gut health and hormones are closely connected. This may be particularly relevant during perimenopause and menopause, when natural hormonal changes can influence how we feel.
Understanding Oestrogen
Oestrogen is one of the body's most important female hormones. During our reproductive years, it is produced mainly by the ovaries, with smaller amounts also made by the adrenal glands and fat tissue.
There are three main forms of oestrogen:
Estradiol (E2) is the primary form of oestrogen produced during the reproductive years. It is the most biologically active form and plays a key role in regulating the menstrual cycle, supporting fertility, building the uterine lining, and the development of female characteristics such as breast tissue.
Estrone (E1) becomes the main form of oestrogen after menopause. It is produced mainly in fat tissue and the adrenal glands and it can be converted into small amounts of estradiol when needed.
Estriol (E3) is the weakest form of oestrogen and is produced by the placenta during pregnancy.
While oestrogen is best known for its role in reproduction, its influence extends far beyond the reproductive system. Oestrogen helps support healthy bones, the cardiovascular system, brain function, muscles, skin and the digestion. It also plays an important role in maintaining a healthy vaginal lining and supporting urinary tract health.
Because oestrogen affects so many different parts of the body, maintaining healthy oestrogen balance and efficiently processing and clearing excess oestrogen, is an important part of overall health and healthy ageing.

How is oestrogen processed and eliminated?
After oestrogen has done its job in the body, it doesn't simply disappear—it needs to be processed and removed efficiently. This process begins in the liver, where oestrogen is broken down through two natural detoxification stages, often referred to as Phase 1 and Phase 2.
The final step happens in the gut, sometimes called Phase 3. Here, the liver packages oestrogen into bile, which carries it into the digestive tract so it can be eliminated through the bowel.
When digestion isn't working well, bowel motions are infrequent, or the balance of beneficial gut bacteria (known as the estrobolome) is disrupted, some of this processed oestrogen may be reabsorbed rather than removed from the body. Over time, this may contribute to higher circulating oestrogen levels in some women and may be associated with symptoms such as heavy periods, bloating, breast tenderness and mood changes.
This is one of the reasons why supporting both liver function and gut health can play an important role in maintaining healthy hormone balance.
What is the Estrobolome?
The estrobolome is a specialised part of the gut microbiome that helps regulate oestrogen levels in the body. It is made up of a collection of gut bacteria, and their genes, that influence how oestrogen is metabolised and eliminated.
When the gut microbiome is healthy and balanced, the estrobolome helps support normal oestrogen metabolism and healthy hormone balance. However, when the gut microbiome becomes disrupted, a state known as dysbiosis, the estrobolome may not function as effectively. This can affect the body's ability to eliminate oestrogen efficiently, allowing some oestrogen to be reabsorbed back into the bloodstream instead of being removed.
A healthy estrobolome is important throughout a woman's life, but it becomes particularly significant during perimenopause and menopause, when changes in oestrogen levels make efficient hormone metabolism even more important. Supporting a healthy gut microbiome is therefore an important part of supporting healthy hormonal wellbeing.
Simple ways to support Gut and Hormonal Health
Supporting your gut microbiome doesn't need to be complicated. Small, consistent lifestyle habits can help create an environment that supports both digestive health and healthy oestrogen metabolism.
Eat a wide variety of plant- based foods
Aim to include a colourful mix of vegetables, fruit, legumes, wholegrains, nuts and seeds each week. Plant foods provide fibre and other nutrients that help nourish beneficial gut bacteria.
Increase Fibre Intake
Dietary fibre helps feed beneficial bacteria, supports regular bowel movements and assists the body's natural elimination processes.
Include fermented foods
Foods such as natural yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi and miso contain beneficial microbes that can help support a diverse gut microbiome. If these foods are new to you, introduce them gradually.
Enjoy cruciferous vegetables regularly
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale and Brussels sprouts contain fibre and naturally occurring plant compounds that support healthy liver function and normal oestrogen metabolism.
Foods to enjoy less often:
Reduce consumption of Ultra Processed Foods that contain food additives, high sugar and high fat. Research shows these foods contribute to an imbalanced gut microbiome and estrobolome.
Reconsider alcohol – research shows that alcohol consumption impacts the healthy balance of our gut microbiome and estrobolome.
